2016-17 Swimming & Diving Athletes of the Week Men's Athlete of the Week - Guido Saccaggi, Catholic February 06, 2017 (Sr., Duluth, Ga.) In the final dual meet of his career, senior Guido Saccaggi captured three first place finishes and guided Catholic to a 169-106 victory over Landmark rival, Susquehanna. Saccaggi kicked off the meet by topping the 2016-17 Landmark leaderboard with a winning time of 10:16.54 in the 1000-freestyle. The Duluth, Ga., native later touched in first for the 200-backstroke (2:01.30) and the 400-individual medley (4:21.93) as the Cardinals finished their regular season undefeated against Landmark Conference opponents. Women's Athlete of the Week - Mal Vishwanath, Drew February 06, 2017 (Fr., Bangalore, India) Freshman Mal Vishwanath was a part of four first place finishes in a victory over Ramapo in the final dual meet of the 2016-17 season. She earned 27 points for the Rangers with wins in the 100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyle events, then swam the fastest overall leg in the 200-yard freestyle relay to help Drew triumph. Men's Athlete of the Week - Jack Mahoney, Drew January 30, 2017 (Fr., Erie, Pa.) Jack Mahoney claims his second Athlete of the Week award following three first place finishes in a dual meet victory at Goucher on Saturday. Mahoney beat the field in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events, earning 18 points for the Rangers. He finished the day by swimming a 22.87-second leadoff leg in the winning 200-yard freestyle relay. Mahoney currently ranks first in the Landmark Conference in the 50, 100 and 200 Free events just three weeks away from championship weekend. Women's Athlete of the Week - Katie Willis, Susquehanna January 30, 2017 (So., Wallingford, Pa.) Sophomore Katie Willis helped the River Hawks to a dual meet victory against Scranton over the weekend. SU beat the Royals 170.5-107.5. Willis captured three first-place finishes, touching the wall in 1:58.32 in the 200 free, 54.81 in the 100 free, and was a member of the 400 free relay that won with a time of 3:46.61. Men's Athlete of the Week - Michael Ma, Drew January 23, 2017 (Fr., Redwood City, Calif.) Freshman Michael Ma earns his second Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week after helping the Drew men's swimming and diving team to their first dual meet win over Scranton since the 2001-02 season. Ma was a part of four first-place finishes - three individual and one relay. He bested the field in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, as well as the 100-yard butterfly, earning 27 points individually for the victorious Rangers. He led off the meet by swimming the fastest backstroke leg in the 200-yard medley relay, helping Drew start the meet in winning fashion. Women's Athlete of the Week - Claire Mason, Scranton January 23, 2017 (So., Livingston, N.J.) Scranton sophomore Claire Mason won three individual events on the afternoon on Saturday, as the Royals improved to 8-1 on the year in dual meets with a 159-110 win over Drew. Mason was the clear winner in two of the three events she won, winning the 200-breaststroke by almost six seconds (2:35.89) and the 200-IM by over two seconds (2:18.84). Men's Athlete of the Week - Bill Crumrine, Susquehanna January 16, 2017 (Sr., Beaver, Pa.) Crumrine won both distance events with victories in the 1000 free (10:17.32) and the 500 free (4:58.43 - winning by just .33 seconds). He was also a member of the second place 400 free relay as Susquehanna was out touched at the wall by .04 seconds. Women's Athlete of the Week - Virginia Cobb, Marywood January 16, 2017 (Jr., Mount Bethel, Pa.) In a meet at Goucher Saturday (win, 162-89), Virginia won four total events in a win over Goucher College (three individual and one relay.) She was victorious in the 50 free (25.99), 200 free (2:03.85), and the 500 free (5:36.34). She also led off the winning 200 free relay with a 25.99 split. Men's Athlete of the Week - John Rinald, Drew December 05, 2016 (Fr., West Hartford, Conn.) Freshman John Rinald became the fastest breaststroker in school history, winning the 100 and 200-yard individual events at the Ranger Invitational, which the Drew men won for the fifth time. Both of his breaststroke times come in at the top of the Landmark Conference through Saturday's invitational. He also helped set two other school records in the 200 and 400-yard medley relays, swimming the fastest breaststroke leg in both to help Drew win each event over the seven-team field and set new school marks in the process. Women's Athlete of the Week - Joann Butkus, Susquehanna December 05, 2016 (Jr., Barnesville, Pa.) Junior Joann Butkus set three conference records and four school records at the Gettysburg Invitational over the weekend. Her conference records came in the 200 medley relay (1:47.89), which was also a school record, the 200 breaststroke (2:23.06), which was also a school record. She broke the seven-year old record set by Catholic's Lisa Brooks, who swam a 2:23.96 in the event. In the 400 medley relay, she set the conference and school record with a time of 3:55.90). Her time of 1:05.46 in the 100 breaststroke set a new school record. Men's Athlete of the Week - Michael Ma, Drew November 21, 2016 (Fr., Redwood City, Cali.) Freshman Michael Ma set a new school record in the 200-yard individual medley and beat a field of eight to finish first in 2:01.12 at Saturday's tri-meet against Elizabethtown and FDU-Florham. The Drew rookie also placed first out of 10 in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.91) and swam the fastest leadoff backstroke leg in the winning 400-yard medley relay team. Ma helped the Rangers defeat Elizabethtown and FDU-Florham and improve to 4-2 in duals, already the highest win total since 2012-13. Women's Athlete of the Week - Katie Jefferson, Drew November 21, 2016 (Fr., Kamuela, Hawaii) Freshman Katie Jefferson paced the Rangers in wins over Elizabethtown and FDU-Florham in a tri-meet on Saturday, winning all three of her events. Jefferson started the day by swimming the fastest butterfly leg on the winning 400-yard medley relay team before winning both of her individual events. She topped a field of eight in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:19.81 and defeated five swimmers in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.93. Both of those times currently rank second in the Landmark Conference this season. Women's Athlete of the Week - Mary Margaret Deedrick, Catholic November 14, 2016 (So., Tampa, Fla.) Mary Margaret touched in with two season-best times and first-place finishes in the 1000-freestyle and 200-breaststroke on Saturday. Additionally, she notched second place in the 200-individual medley and led of the 200-medley relay, help Catholic to its Landmark victory over Elizabethtown. Men's Athlete of the Week - Kyle O'Donnel (Susquehanna) November 07, 2016 (So., Darien, Conn.) Sophomroe Kyle O'Donnel helped the River Hawks to two victories over Marywood and Drew over the weekend. O'Donnell totaled 318.38 points on the 1-meter divig board to set a new Susquehanna pool record. Women's Athlete of the Week - Jenny Stein, Drew November 07, 2016 (Jr., Calabasas, Calif.) Junior Jenny Stein led the Rangers to a win over Marywood at the Susquehanna Tri-Meet on Saturday. Following a second place finish in the 100-yard freestyle and a third place in the 50-yard freestyle sprint, she closed out the day with a pair of wins. Stein led off the first place winning 400-yard freestyle relay team, then set a new school and pool record with a six-dive score of 275.55 on the one-meter diving board. Men's Athlete of the Week - Joseph Soraghan, Catholic October 31, 2016 (Jr., Litchfield, N.H.) During Catholic's Landmark victory over Marywood, Soraghan won both diving events while capturing the Catholic University 3-meter diving record with a winning score of 242.95. Soraghan shattered the previous record of 214.60 set in 1991 by Eric Van Blunk. Additionally, Soraghan boasted a season-high 216.40 points to earn the top spot in the 1-meter diving event. Women's Athlete of the Week - Susan Neggia, Scranton October 31, 2016 (So., Fair Lawn, N.J.) Neggia led the Royals over the weekend in a Landmark meet against Catholic. The sophomore helped Scranton win their third dual meet of the young season as she won the 200-backstroke in almost six seconds (2:16.86), while capturing the 100-backstroke by two seconds (1:03.09). Men's Athlete of the Week - Christopher Whalen (Scranton) October 17, 2016 (So., West Islip, N.Y.) Whalen won two events on the day, leading Scranton to dual meet victories over Cabrini and FDU-Florham in their season opener on Saturday. In his first collegiate meet, he won two individual events and helped Scranton clinch victories on the day after swimming a leg on the 400-free relay team. Women's Athlete of the Week - Emma Sommers (Scranton) October 17, 2016 (Sr., Bridgewater, N.J.) Sommers helped Scranton dominate the day against Cabrini and FDU-Florham on Saturday, as the Royals posted two victories to start the season. The senior won the 50-freestyle and swam the anchor and fastest leg on a victorious 200-medley relay squad (25.54).
