2017-18 Swimming & Diving Athletes of the Week Men's Athlete of the Week - Michael Ma, Drew February 05, 2018 (So., Redwood City, Calif.) Drew sophomore Michael Ma placed first in both of his events at Ramapo on Saturday. He swam the 200 individual medley in 2:02.16 and posted a winning time of 2:02.31 in the 200 butterfly. Women's Athlete of the Week - Mal Vishwanath, Drew February 05, 2018 (So., Bangalore, India) Drew sophomore Mal Vishwanath recorded two wins and a second-place finish in a dual meet at Ramapo on Saturday. She took first in the 100 butterfly (1:01.02) and 200 freestyle (1:57.74) and placed second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.34 seconds. Men's Athlete of the Week - Sam Hicks, Catholic January 29, 2018 (Jr., Miami, Fla.) Catholic University junior Sam Hicks guided the Cardinals to an outstanding 187-107 victory over NCAA Division I opponent Howard Universtiy. With the victory, the Catholic men secured a perfect 9-0 record for the 2017-18 season. Hicks won two of two of his individual events as he led a Catholic sweep of the 200-freestyle with a winning time of 1:47.12 and a one-two finish in the 100-freestyle (48.72). He finished out the meet as a member of the victorious 200-freestyle relay where he split his leg in 22.28 seconds. Women's Athlete of the Week - Lauren Byrne, Scranton January 29, 2018 (Fr., Cranford, N.J.) Scranton freshman Lauren Byrne won three individual events on Saturday as Scranton fell to Susquehanna in its final meet of the regular season. The freshman highlighted her day with a school record time of 59.17 in the 100 backstroke while also winning to the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM. Byrne also helped the 400 yard freestyle relay team to a second place finish. Men's Athlete of the Week - Michael Ma, Drew January 22, 2018 (So., Redwood City, Calif.) Drew sophomore Michael Ma won three events in the dual meet against Scranton over the weekend. Ma won the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.45. He followed that performance up with a win in the 100 butterfly (53.48) and helped the 200 medley relay team to a first-place finish with a time of 1:39.40. Women's Athlete of the Week - Katie Willis, Susquehanna January 22, 2018 (Jr., Wallingford, Pa.) Susquehanna junior Katie Willis set pool records in the 50 and 100 free against Bloomsburg and also improved her pool record in the 50 free in the first leg of the 200 free relay. She won the 50 with a time of 24.66 and in the 100 free, she won with a time of 53.16. In the dual meet against Goucher, she won the 200 free with a time of 1:57.97 and was a member of two winning relay teams. Men's Athlete of the Week - Olivier Nguyen, Catholic January 15, 2018 (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) Catholic downed the Shoremen of Washington College with the help of sophomore Olivier Nguyen’s four wins. He started the meet by leading off Catholic’s winning 200-medley relay with a 24.53 backstroke split. Nguyen later hit the wall first in both of his individual events with a finishing time of 54.30 in the 100-backstroke and 53.30 in the 100-butterfly before capping off the Cardinal’s victory as the second leg of the winning 200-freestyle relay. Women's Athlete of the Week - Joann Butkus, Susquehanna January 15, 2018 (Sr., Barnsville, Pa.) Senior Joann Butkus won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events and also helped two relays to victories for the Susquehanna University Women's Swimming and Diving team Sunday as the River Hawks upended Franklin & Marshall 159-103 in a non-conference meet. Butkus won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.02 and took first in the 200 with a time of 2:32.03. She helped the 200-medley relay capture first-place with a time of 1:52.11. Butkus capped the meet as she was a member of the first-place 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:43.51. Men's Athlete of the Week - Matheus Macena, Drew December 04, 2017 (Fr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) Drew freshman Matheus Macena posted three school records at the Ranger Invitational. He established a new program standard in the 100 butterfly (51.54), while also swimming the leadoff leg on the record-setting 200 medley relay (1:36.35) and 400 freestyle relay (3:14.03). Matheus also earned an individual win in the 100 backstroke (53.30) and took second in the 50 freestyle (22.10). Women's Athlete of the Week - Mal Vishwanath, Drew December 04, 2017 (So., Bangalore, India) Drew sophomore Mal Vishwanath set six school records at the Ranger Invitational. She posted an NCAA "B" qualifier in the 1650 freestyle with a Landmark-record time of 17:09.51 and broke her own 1000 record with a 10:22.21 split. She also established program marks in the 400 IM (4:35.37) and 100 freestyle (53.19), while notching an NCAA "B" time of 5:00.30, which was also a school record, in the 500 freestyle. Finally, she swam the anchor leg on the 400 freestyle relay squad that set a program record of 3:35.96. Men's Athlete of the Week - Matthew Mills, Scranton November 20, 2017 (Fr., Sewell, N.J.) Scranton freshman Matthew Mills won three individual titles and swam on a relay team that finished first and two others that finished second to lead Scranton to a dominant victory in the Diamond City Invite over two days. Mills' win in the 200 backstroke on Sunday was a meet record with a time of 2:10.62. He won twice on Saturday while swimming on the victorious 400 medley relay team and the 800 free relay that finished second as the Royals opened up an insurmountable lead on the first day. Women's Athlete of the Week - Lauren Byrne, Scranton November 20, 2017 (Fr., Cranford, N.J.) Scranton freshman Lauren Byrne was nearly unbeatable while leading Scranton to a victory in the Diamond City Invite over two days this weekend. She won two individual events and all three relays she swam on. Her only blemish was a second place in the 100 backstroke. Her wins in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke on Saturday were top times this season and set school records, helping the Royals take control on the opening day of the event. Men's Athlete of the Week - Olivier Nyugen, Catholic November 13, 2017 (So., West Chester, Pa.) Catholic sophomore Olivier Nguyen earned three wins for the Cardinals during their 189.5-70.5 victory over Landmark opponent Elizabethtown College. He set a new school record in the 100-individual medley with a winning time of 55.46 after he took gold in the 100-backstroke (55.50) earlier in the meet. Women's Athlete of the Week - Caroline Beal, Catholic November 13, 2017 (Fr., Newtown, Conn.) Caroline Beal racked up four victories during Catholic's 211-48 triumph over league opponent Elizabethtown College. The freshman won both of the backstroke events, taking the 100-backstroke in 1:03.59 while capturing the 200-backstroke in 2:17.17. Additionally, Beal led off both of the Cardinals victorious relays with a 29.77 backstroke split in the 200-medley relay (1:57.59) and a 26.63-second leg in the 200-freestyle relay (1:45.72). Men's Athlete of the Week - James Orzolek, Susquehanna November 06, 2017 (Jr., Bloomsburg, Pa.) Susquehanna junior James Orzolek had a pair of first place finishes and clinched the team win over Drew as he swam the fastest 100-yard leg of the 400-Free Relay as the anchor leg with a split of 47.76 (more than 1/2 second faster than his winning 100 Free) to beat the Drew Relay by .02 seconds to beat Drew 144-141 in the meet. Women's Athlete of the Week - Morgan James, Catholic November 06, 2017 (Fr., Crozet, Va.) The Catholic University of America women's swimming & diving team edged NCAA Division II Barton College 149-113 on Saturday with the help freshman Morgan James winning all four of her races. The rookies started by anchoring winning 200-freestyle relay before taking both of the sprint freestyle events. James won the 50-freestyle with a 25.51 while swimming her season-best time or 55.54 in the 100-freestyle. James rounded out the afternoon leading off the 200-freestyle relay with a 25.49 split to put the Cardinals in the perfect position for the victory. Men's Athlete of the Week - Matt Mahon, Catholic October 30, 2017 (Fr., Sewell, N.J.) The Cardinals took down two Landmark opponents with freshman Matt Mahon taking the top spots in four freestyle events over the course of the weekend. In a showdown between the top two conference teams, Catholic topped Scranton with Mahon snagging the top spot in the both on the sprint freestyle events. He took the 50-free in 22.74 seconds and later led the 100-free in 49.31 seconds. On Sunday versus Marywood, the rookie took on the mid-distance freestyle events winning the 200-free in 1:47.73 and the 500-free in 5:05.42. Mahon also anchored Catholic's first-place freestyle relays in both meets. Women's Athlete of the Week - Lauren Byrne, Scranton October 30, 2017 (Fr., Cranford, N.J.) Scranton freshman Lauren Byrne was dominant on the night at Catholic, as she helped Scranton take a dual meet victory from the host Cardinals. She won three events in just her second ever collegiate meet, and helped a relay team finish second. Byrne dominated in the 100-breaststroke (winning by three seconds) and the 200-IM (won by almost eight seconds), then narrowly won the 100-freestyle (over a second). Men's Athlete of the Week - Michael Ma, Drew October 16, 2017 (So., Redwood City, Calif.) Drew sophomore Michael Ma won the 100 yard backstroke and 200 yard individual medley against Stevens on Saturday. Ma posted a time of 2:00.54, which is currently sixth-best in the nation, in the 200 IM. He registered a 55.71-second clocking in the 100 backstroke. Women's Athlete of the Week - Mal Vishwanath, Drew October 16, 2017 (So., Bangalore, India) Sophomore Mal Vishwanath posted two NCAA-leading times in the Rangers' season-opening dual meet against Stevens on Saturday. She registered an NCAA "B" qualifier of 17:32.23, just the third NCAA-qualifying time in program history and the top time in the NCAA, in the 1650 yard freestyle. Her 1000-yard split of 10:33.29 was also the best in the nation so far this season. The sophomore won the 500 yard freestyle (5:19.86) and took second (by one-hundredth of a second) in the 100 yard freestyle (55.02).
