Scranton's Zinn Collects NFCA Third Team All-American Honors

Scranton's Zinn Collects NFCA Third Team All-American Honors

TYLER, Texas - Junior outfielder Megan Zinn of The University of Scranton softball team has collected multiple awards following a record-breaking season for the Royals.  On Thursday night, she received the most prestigious award of her career by being named a Third Team All-American as selected by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

Zinn, the only player from the Landmark Conference to earn All-American honors this spring, is just the second player in Scranton history to achieve NFCA All-American status, joining teammate Jennifer Sweeney who was a Third Team honoree last spring.

The All-American honor is the latest postseason accolade for Zinn, who has also been lauded as an NFCA First Team All-Atlantic Region pick, a CoSIDA First Team All-District Team selection, and a First Team All-Landmark Conference honoree.

Zinn, who was one of just three players to play in all 47 games this spring, led Scranton to the program's first-ever Landmark Conference championship this spring and first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1983 with a remarkable season both at the plate and defensively as the Royals' centerfielder.

At the plate, Zinn posted an outstanding .459 batting average with 72 hits including 21 doubles, one triple, and one home run.  She shattered both the Landmark Conference and Scranton records for hits in a season while also breaking the Royals' record for doubles in a year.

Zinn ranked fourth in all of NCAA Division III for both hits and doubles while leading the Landmark Conference in both categories.  She also led the conference in runs scored, ranked third in batting average, finished fourth in the in on-base percentage and RBIs, tied for fifth in stolen bases, and was sixth in slugging percentage.

Zinn, who also walked 11 times and struck out just five times in 173 plate appearances this season, finished the year with a  .485 on-base percentage and a .624 slugging percentage.  She scored 51 runs, had 43 RBI, and went 10-for-11 in stolen base attempts this spring.

Defensively, Zinn did not commit an error in 69 chances, recording 68 putouts and had one outfield assist to post a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.  Her tremendous range and fielding ability also saw her save extra-base hits and runs by cutting off balls hit to the gaps.

Scranton finished the 2019 season with a 32-15 overall record.

The NFCA Division III All-America softball teams are selected from the pool of players who earned first team All-Region recognition by eight NCAA Division III head coaches representing the eight NCAA regions.
