Scranton Favored in 2016 Landmark Women's Soccer Preseason Poll

Scranton Favored in 2016 Landmark Women's Soccer Preseason Poll

TOWSON, Md. – The votes are in, and the results of the 20016 Landmark Women's Soccer Preseason Poll are in. the University of Scranton is the favorite heading into the 2016 season. The Royals will look to capture their fifth Landmark title since joining the conference in 2007.

With the loss of Landmark Defensive Player of the Year Jasmine Sconciafurno, the Royals hope the return of Erin Casey can help anchor the defense while Christina Akalski, Kelsey Bacon and Kelly Egan team up to spark the offense. A tough non-conference schedule with three road games against teams that made the NCAA tournament last season will help prepare the club for conference play.

Defending Landmark champion Catholic University is ranked second in the preseason balloting. The Cardinals are coming off the programs most successful season in recent history with back to back Landmark titles. CUA looks to continue to be a dominant force the conference. Head Coach J.P. Sousa returns four 2015 All-Conference selections, including Offensive Player of the Year Lindsay Aleman, and Rookie of the Year Taylor Pisk, and has added 10 newcomers to the roster.

Elizabethtown arrives at preseason No. 3 and will once again be looking to get into the Landmark Conference Championships for a third time after falling in the semis the previous two years and making its first title game. The Blue Jays lose four key starters including top play-makers Kaceyanne Cerankowski and Lauren Berry, and all-time winningest goalie in program history, Dana Robidoux. Trisha Clark will also be a big loss for EC in the midfield, but first-year head coach Amy Hough has a core group returning that played a majority of time together on the field.

With new turf down at John Makuvek, the Greyhounds look to make a return to the Landmark Conference Tournament this fall with the return of 14 players and six starters. Leading the returnees are senior defender Christina Miklas and junior defender Lauren Bertucci who were both on the Landmark All-Conference Second Team last fall.

The new season will kick-off on Thursday, September 1, with Landmark matches getting underway Saturday, Sept. 24. The 2016 Landmark Women's Soccer Tournament will consist of four teams with the semifinal taking place on Tuesday, Nov 1, followed by the championship match on Saturday, Nov. 5.
