SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Two 45-minute halves and two 10-minute overtime periods were not enough for the Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team and the Catholic University to decide the winner of the Landmark Conference Semifinal game Wednesday night at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove. After the two teams ended the game in a scoreless tie, Susquehanna was able to advance with a 3-2 win over the Cardinals in the penalty shots.
Susquehanna (14-3-2) fell behind early in penalty kicks as Catholic (10-7-1) taking a 2-0 lead before Emily Lefkowitz scored on the second attempt to cut the lead in half.
Jennifer Thorsheim made saves on the next three Catholic attempts while Emily Sullivan and Grayclynn Juckes scored for the River Hawks to seal the advancement.
The Cardinals forced Susquehanna to play its defensive game, outshooting the River Hawks 20-7. Each team recorded two shots in the overtime periods. Thorsheim recorded seven saves in the tie.
The last time that the River Hawks played for the Landmark Conference title was 2009. Susquehanna lost to top ranked Catholic 1-0 and ironically advanced to the title game with a penalty kick win over Drew in the semifinal round.
