Matt Gass Named Landmark Outdoor Track & Field Senior Scholar Athlete
TOWSON, Md. — Susquehanna sprinter Matt Gass has been named the 2017 Landmark Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Senior Scholar Athlete. Gass is the third River Hawk honored in 2016-17, and he is the second outdoor honoree in the Landmark era, joining Jalon Orzolek (2009).
The Coal Township, Pa., native closed out his conference career with his first 200 meter dash title at this year’s Landmark Championships. He also placed third in the 400 meter run. Gass was voted the Co-Track Athlete of the Year for the second time in 2016-17 after being honored during the indoor season.
In the classroom, Gass maintained a 3.58 grade-point average as a computer science major. He is a six-time Landmark Academic Honor Roll honoree and was named to the Landmark spring All-Sportsmanship Team.
The Landmark Conference selects 20 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics.
The honorees must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, faculty athletic representatives, senior woman administrators, and sports information directors. Chosen at the end of each sport season, the eight spring honorees will be announced over the next week.
