Scranton Women's Lacrosse Battles Hard But Falls To No. 20 Stevens In NCAA Opening Round

YORK, Pa. -- The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team (10-10) put up a valiant effort against No. 20 Stevens (18-2) but were defeated 7-5 in the opening round of the 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament hosted at York College.

The Royals close out a historic season that saw them earn their first Landmark Conference title in program history.

Sophomore Grace Lane had an impressive day offensively as she led all scorers with four goals.

Stevens opened up the game with back-to-back goals, but a late first-period goal from sophomore Molly McCarren brought Scranton within one heading into the second quarter.

The Ducks scored four straight goals to start the second period as they took a 6-1 lead with 5:53 remaining in the first half. Lane scored pair of late goals to cut the lead to 6-3 at the end of the opening half.

Neither side got on the score sheet in the third period as Stevens maintained a three-goal lead heading into the final period.

Lane scored a free position goal at the 10:38 mark to cut the lead to just two goals but the Ducks responded just over a minute later and regained their three-goal lead. Lane scored a goal in the final minute of action, but it was too late as Stevens went on to win by a final score of 7-5.

Senior Caroline Miller won a game-high five draw controls in her final game as a Royal. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Boldis made eight saves on 15 shots faced.
