Friday Focus with Michelle Ruano

TOWSON, Md. – Every Friday, the Landmark Conference spotlights one of our standout student-athletes in the Friday Focus series. This week’s feature highlights Michelle Ruano of the Goucher College women’s soccer team. From pregame music rituals to ringing the bell after wins, Michelle shares what makes her soccer experience unforgettable.

Favorite pregame routine or superstition?
I like to listen to music and just have a moment to myself to focus and prepare for the game. I also always tie my shoes three times before I play.

What’s your favorite moment with your team?
One of my favorite moments was during a team bonding event. We watched a scary movie, ate some pasta, and just had a great time together.

How do you stay focused during busy weeks?
I like to find short amounts of time to catch up with friends or family and listen to music.

Who’s a teammate that leads by example?
I think our captains, Jordan and Liz, do a great job. They are always pushing everyone to do their best on and off the field.

What does your sport teach you about life?
Soccer teaches us a lot about teamwork, leadership, and communication, and the skills we use in school and our jobs.

Favorite road trip or away game tradition?
Blasting music in the locker room, dancing, and getting hype before games. It wakes us up, gets us excited, and prepares us to compete.

How do you celebrate big wins?
I celebrate with my friends and family, usually by treating myself to a dessert or food.

What will you miss most when your playing career ends?
I’ll miss preparing for games — the music in the locker room, everyone dancing and hyping each other up.

Favorite Landmark road trip memory?
Playing games on the bus with my teammates during away trips.

First sport you ever played?
Soccer. I’ve loved it from the start.

Favorite team tradition?
At the beginning of the year, we get a “partner” to check in on throughout the season. After wins, we also ring the bell. That’s one of my favorite traditions.

Favorite moment with fans or family in the stands?
I love how they’re always there to support us, win or lose. Even during cool downs, they’re clapping and cheering no matter what.
