Track and Field 1/2/2026 12:00:00 PM Friday Focus with Liam Maguire TOWSON, Md. – Every Friday, the Landmark Conference spotlights one of our standout student-athletes in the Friday Focus series. This week’s feature highlights Liam Maguire, a member of the Moravian University men’s track and field team. From finding the right fit in Bethlehem to the mindset that carries him through tough races, Liam shares what drives him as a Greyhound. Why did you choose Moravian University? As someone from New Jersey, I had very little knowledge of Moravian and the city of Bethlehem. So when I was sent a letter from the track team saying they would like me to meet the team and go for a tour, I didn't know what to expect. After getting the tour and meeting the team, I immediately knew I wanted to come here. Everyone at Moravian looks out for one another, and everyone is willing to help you. Because of the smaller size of the student body, you can truly get an individualized experience here rather than at a big school. What’s something you've learned from being part of a team? Something that I've learned from being a part of a team is that you can't do everything alone. Though track is different from other team sports because of its structure, the team aspect, nevertheless, is crucial to success. Though it may not seem that way when you're all alone in your lane about to race, so many people are there screaming and yelling, hoping that you do well. There is no way I would have been able to get through tough workouts without seeing everyone around me pushing as well. Surrounding yourself with inspiring people, you will feel more motivated than ever to accomplish anything you want. Most challenging part of balancing athletics and academics? The most challenging part about balancing both is remembering that neither of them defines you. Balancing school work and practice is just about routine, but reminding yourself that getting a bad grade doesn't mean you won't be successful is sometimes the hardest thing. That fact, mixed with the weight of underperforming in your sport, can crush you if you don't separate yourself from them. That's what I find most challenging as a student athlete, because not only is our future success weighing on us, but also the expectations we set for ourselves athletically, which can feel just as heavy. Who do you compete for — what or who drives you? I play for myself and my teammates. Track isn't about running faster than anyone in your heat (unless it's conferences). It's always about beating yourself, running your fastest time, and becoming the best athlete you can be. When running for myself gets tough, I think about everyone who supports me and wants to see me succeed, and that pushes me to compete. Favorite Landmark Conference opponent, and why? Catholic, cause they always keep it classy If your sport had/has walk-up music, what would yours be? Rock That Body - Black Eyed Peas What’s one thing you’re proud of off the field? My knowledge of niche 2010s football players Best piece of life advice you’ve ever received? "This too shall pass" Favorite movie quote or show line you always say? "I'M TIRED OF THIS GRANPA.....THAT'S TOO DARN BAD" - Holes First time you knew you loved your sport? The first time I three stepped between the hurdles in my junior year of high school. Favorite place on campus to relax or recharge? The New HUB study rooms Favorite song before a competition? Can't Feel My Face - The Weekend One teammate you’d want on your trivia team? Diego Portales
