This week’s feature highlights Joey Locke, a member of the Catholic University men’s track and field team. From chasing personal bests to team inspiration, Locke shares what drives him on and off the track as a Cardinal.
What’s your favorite memory competing at Catholic University?
The first time I went sub-16 in the 5k, my family and friends were all watching the results come in. My 5k time going into the season was 17 minutes, and I was ecstatic when the time finally came in.
What drew you to your sport originally?
My mom made me try cross country in the seventh grade after my elementary school basketball career didn’t work out. I’ve been running ever since.
How do you prepare the night before a big game or meet?
I always have spaghetti and meatballs for dinner, then either put on a movie or my country playlist before going to bed early.
Favorite class and professor you’ve taken?
Ethics in Business and Economics with Prof. Radich.
Who inspires you most on your team, and why?
Kamran Jagadesan is one of the most resilient athletes I know. Despite any setbacks that come his way, he keeps on putting in hard work every day.
What’s your go-to hype song?
Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen.
Postgame meal of choice?
Double cheeseburger with Cajun fries and a shake from Five Guys.
Hidden talent most people don’t know you have?
I am a Black Belt in karate, and have also been trained in ground fighting and fighting with a staff.

Derek Jeter
First college meet — what do you remember?
My bib number at my first college race was 305, so I kept thinking about Pitbull songs to distract from the nerves.
