Friday Focus with Spencer Siegel

TOWSON, Md. – Every Friday, the Landmark Conference spotlights one of its standout student-athletes in the Friday Focus series. This week’s feature highlights Spencer Siegel, a member of the Juniata College men’s indoor track and field team. From record-breaking throws to finding his place in the throwing circle, Siegel shares what fuels his competitive edge and drives him to keep pushing his limits.

What’s your favorite memory competing for your school?
Breaking the indoor shot put record for the first time, freshman year at Franklin & Marshall.

What drew you to your sport originally?
In middle school, my history professor recommended I try the long jump and the 100-meter dash to keep me fast for football. I tried them both and hated them, but I had already signed up for track, so I decided to try throwing, and I have loved it ever since.

How do you prepare the night before a big game or meet?
I lay my warmups and uniform out on my desk, and try to visualize my round six throw.

Who inspires you most on your team, and why?
Probably Coach Barret. To originally come here as a soccer player and to leave with multiple school records in track is something I aspire to. As someone who originally came here for football and ended up just doing track, I want to follow in his footsteps and break records as well.

What’s your go-to hype song?
Either Head in the Ceiling Fan by Title Fight, or Warm Safe Place by Staind.

Postgame meal of choice?
Chinese Food.

Hidden talent most people don’t know you have?
I can do a split.

Favorite athlete growing up?
Le’Veon Bell.

First jersey number — and why?

I wore the number seven for football in first grade because of Ben Roethlisberger.

Favorite class or professor?
My favorite class I’ve had so far was Viking Religion, with the goat Don Braxton.

First college meet — what do you remember?

I remember throwing up on the first flight, waiting around for hours before I had to get re-warmed up for finals, and then proceeding to throw awful in finals.

One word your teammates would use to describe you?
Opinionated.
