This week’s feature highlights Gehrig Shannon, a member of the University of Scranton men’s golf team. From championship wins to the routines that keep him sharp, Shannon shares what drives him on and off the course as a Royal. Favorite routine or superstition? I mark my golf balls the same way before every match and tournament. What’s your favorite moment with your team? Winning the Landmark championship and going to Las Vegas for nationals. How do you stay focused during busy weeks? Sticking to my routine. Who’s a teammate that leads by example? Jack Novis. He is always the first guy on the course and the last to leave. What does your sport teach you about life? Golf teaches me to stay calm even when things don’t necessarily go my way. In golf, you have to stay patient, and when things don’t go as planned, you move on to the next hole. Favorite hobby or activity outside of your sport? Fishing in upstate NY How do you celebrate big wins? After big wins, my favorite way to celebrate is going out to eat and hanging out with the team. What will you miss most when your playing career ends? I will miss practicing with my teammates and traveling to tournaments. What’s your favorite part of game day? Knowing that I get to compete and feel the pressure of competition. First sport you ever played? Baseball Favorite team tradition? Going out to eat with the team and Coach Karpovich. Favorite moment with fans or family in the stands? Both of my parents were watching when I got my first hole-in-one during a match. Favorite Landmark Conference memory so far? Competing in the conference championship. I have also enjoyed competing against the same guys for the past three years.
