(Updated July, 2025)
The Landmark Conference was founded in 2005 to bring together academically focused institutions in the mid-Atlantic region that shared a commitment to broad-based athletic participation and the Division III philosophy. The conference began competition in fall 2007 and continues to prioritize integrity, institutional alignment, and the student-athlete experience. Landmark institutions are recognized for academic excellence, leadership development, and a deep commitment to the Division III model of comprehensive student engagement.
Since its inception, the Landmark's core membership has remained remarkably consistent. The original eight full members—The Catholic University of America, Drew University, Goucher College, Juniata College, Moravian University, Susquehanna University, the University of Scranton, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy—formed a strong foundation for the league. Elizabethtown College was added as a full member in 2013, with Lycoming College and Wilkes University joining in 2023 to bring the conference to ten full members. In addition to its full-time members, the Landmark has strategically welcomed affiliate members in select sports to strengthen competition and expand opportunities.
The Landmark continues to grow its championship offerings in alignment with member interest and student-athlete opportunity. The league began sponsoring men's and women's golf in 2017 and launched football as a conference sport in 2023. In 2025, the Presidents' Council approved the addition of men's volleyball, with competition set to begin in the 2026–27 academic year. The Landmark currently sponsors 23 championships, with 15 providing automatic qualification to the NCAA postseason.
The Landmark is recognized as a leader in Division III for its commitment to innovation and enhancing the student-athlete experience. The conference regularly hosts championships and special events at neutral sites, elevating the postseason environment for participants and fans. In 2023, the Landmark became the first Division III conference to sign a multimedia rights agreement, expanding the visibility of its teams and delivering enhanced coverage across all sports.
The Landmark's governance structure fosters strong collaboration between institutional leaders, ensuring decisions remain rooted in mission-driven priorities and student success. United by this collective vision and bold leadership, the Landmark continues to redefine what a Division III conference can be—innovative, student-centered, and committed to excellence.
