2017-18 Softball Athletes of the Week 2017-18 Athletes of the Week All Preview Recap List View Grid View Athlete of the Week - Jennifer Sweeney, Scranton April 23, 2018 (Fr., P/IF - Dumont, N.J.) Scranton freshman Jennifer Sweeney had a big week at the plate, batting .588 with a 1.176 slugging percentage. The freshman totaled 10 hits including three home runs and one double while added nine RBI and scoring eight runs. Sweeney hit safely in five of the Royals' six games and had at least two hits in four of those contests. She also won a pair of games in the circle with 15 strikeouts in 15.1 innings of work. Pitcher of the Week - Amanda Carisone, Moravian April 23, 2018 (Sr, P - Neshanic Station, N.J.) Moravian senior Amanda Carisone tossed two shutouts in a 4-0 week for the No. 6 Greyhounds, who won three of four game by shutout this week. Carisone allowed five hits and no walks while striking out nine batters in 11 innings. She tossed the first four innings with five strikeouts in a 9-0, five-winning win over Eastern University. Carisone then had four strikeouts in an 8-0 victory at The College of Staten Island. She also added one putout and four assists in six chances in the field. Athlete of the Week - Heather Pearson, Susquehanna April 16, 2018 (Sr., INF - Alexandria, Va.) Susquehanna senior Heather Pearson helped the River Hawks to a 6-1 week where she went 12-of-22 from the plate with three doubles, two triples, and 10 RBI. The senior hit safely in all seven games with multiple hits in four. She finished the week with a batting average of .545 and a slugging percentage of .864. Pitcher of the Week - Josie Novak, Moravian April 16, 2018 (Sr, P - Somerville, N.J.) Moravian senior Josie Novak tossed a pair of shutouts in Landmark Conference action in a 4-0 week for the No. 10 Greyhounds. She allowed just four hits and two walks over 12 innings to go with 12 strikeouts. Novak tossed a one-hit shutout with two walks and six strikeouts in a 7-0 win over Elizabethtown College. She then scattered three hits to go with six strikeouts and no walks in a 9-0, five inning win at Drew University, her 29th career shutout. Novak had two assists in the field in two chances. Athlete of the Week - Mackenzie Duffy, Scranton April 09, 2018 (Fr., C - Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) Scranton freshman Mackenzie Duffy had an outstanding week at the plate, batting .619 with 13 hits in 21 at-bats to lead Scranton to a 6-0 week. The freshman catcher totaled seven RBI and score seven runs on the week while collecting four doubles and one triple. Duffy, who has now hit safely in seven straight games, had two or more hits in five of the Royals' six contests on the week including a 4-4 effort in a win at Hunter on Friday night. Pitcher of the Week - Jennifer Sweeney, Scranton April 09, 2018 (Fr., P/IF - Dumont, N.J.) Scranton freshman Jennifer Sweeney continued her strong rookie season by going 3-0 with two complete games in three appearances on the week. The freshman posted a 0.74 ERA and held opponents to just a .145 batting average. Sweeney yielded just nine hits while striking out eight batters in 19.0 innings in the circle. She also surrendered just two extra-base hits and two runs on the week. Athlete of the Week - Leigh Ann Greenwald, Suqsuehanna April 02, 2018 (Sr., OF - Piscataway, N.J.) Susquehanna senior Leigh Ann Greenwald helped the River Hawks to a 3-0 weekend. She went 5-of-14 from the plate with two doubles, two triples, four RBI and four stolen bases. She finished the weekend with a.357 average. Pitcher of the Week - Gabby Bubba, Susquehanna April 02, 2018 (Fr., P - Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) Susquehanna freshman Gabby Bubba played a key role in the River Hawks two wins over Catholic last weekend. Bubba came in as a reliever in both games and held the Cardinals to six hits over eight innings. The freshman also picked up the win against Dickinson to go 3-0 on the week. Bubba finished the weekend with eight strikeouts. Athlete of the Week - Jennifer Carthew, Juniata March 26, 2018 (Jr., P/1B - , New Paris, Pa.) Juniata junior Jennifer Carthew hit .370 over the nine games during the Eagles spring break trip. Carthew went 10-of-27 from the plate to go along with three doubles, five RBI, five walks, and a stolen base. She helped the Eagles to a 6-1 win over nationally ranked Babson where the junior had a hit. She safely hit in seven of the nine games, including a 3-for-4 outing against Fredonia. Pitcher of the Week - Alyssa Wilkinson, Elizabethtown March 26, 2018 (So, LHP/1B - Quakertown, Pa.) Elizabethtown sophomore pitcher Alyssa Wilkinson won her seventh straight decision (7-0) to start the season last Monday in a non-conference 2-1 win over Dickinson. Wilkinson allowed 1 run on 4 hits over seven innings, her seventh complete game of the year. She is the Landmark's leader in ERA and wins and ranks top 5 in strikeouts. Nationally, Wilkinson is 16th overall in ERA and third among pitchers with at least 35.0 innings pitched and second among those with over 40 innings thrown. Athlete of the Week - Sarah Personette, Elizabethtown March 19, 2018 (Fr, C/OF - Schuylkill Haven, Pa.) Elizabethtown freshman Sarah Personette hit .500 on Sunday in a pair of wins over Drew. She was responsible for ending game one with a towering three-run shot to left center field that made it 8-0 in the fifth for E-town. Personette followed that up with a 2-for-3 effort in game two and drove in another run to bring her RBI total on the day to four, the most of any Blue Jay against Drew. She lifted her season average above .300 and helped guide Alyssa Wilkinson to a perfect game in game one behind the plate. Pitcher of the Week - Jennifer Sweeney, Scranton March 19, 2018 (Fr., P/IF - Dumont, N.J.) Scranton freshman Jennifer Sweeney was outstanding in the circle, posting a 2-0 record with a 0.47 ERA. The freshman struck out 17 batters and allowed just one earned run in 15.0 innings of work. Sweeney helped Scranton to its first no-hitter since 2011 by tossing a pair of no-hit innings in an 8-0, five-inning win over MCLA on Wednesday. She finishing her week with a complete game, three-hitter in a 4-1 victory over UMass-Boston on Thursday after also tossing six innings of three-hit ball in a 6-5 victory over Minnesota-Morris on Monday. Athlete of the Week - Emma Varrato, Elizabethtown March 12, 2018 (Jr, 2B/SS - Allentown, Pa.) Elizabethtown junior Emma Varrato had a stellar week of play for the Blue Jays in Florida. Varrato hit .640 in the final eight games and comes home leading the Landmark in average at .576. This past week, she went 16-for-25 at the plate with at least one hit in all eight games. Six of the eight games were multi-hit efforts which included a 4-for-4 effort in a win over Nebraska Wesleyan on March 5. Varrato had four doubles, three home runs, and 11 RBI along with a stolen base. Pitcher of the Week - Alyssa Wilkinson, Elizabethtown March 12, 2018 (So, LHP/1B - Quakertown, Pa.) Elizabethtown sophomore Alyssa Wilkinson went 4-0 this past week for Elizabethtown in four appearances, with all four starts being complete game efforts, including an extra-inning win over Roger Williams in eight innings on March 9. She had struck out a career-high six batters before fanning a new career-high nine the following start on March 10 against UMass Boston. In Wilkinson's four starts, she threw two shutouts and two one-hitters and only gave up a grand total of three earned runs in 29 innings. Athlete of the Week - Brooke Wehr, Moravian March 05, 2018 (Fr, RF - Orefield, Pa.) Moravian College freshman Brooke Wehr helped the No. 17 Greyhounds to a 3-3 record at the 2018 NFCA DIII Leadoff Classic against some of the top teams in the nation. Wehr, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, hit .435 for the six games as she went 10-for-23 at the plate. She also had 10 runs, four homers, eight RBI, two walks, one stolen base, a .480 on-base percentage and a .957 slugging percentage. Wehr hit safely in all six games, and had three multi-hit games. Pitcher of the Week - Stephanie Burns, Drew March 05, 2018 (Fr, P - Bellmore, N.Y.) Drew rookie Stephanie Burns tossed a two-hit shutout in her first collegiate start against Penn State Altoona on Sunday. She didn't allow a runner past second base after the third inning and allowed just three walks and struck out two in the 7-0 complete game victory.
