TOWSON, Md. - The Landmark Conference selects 22 senior scholar-athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics.
The honorees must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletic representatives, and sports information directors.
Kallan Carter of Susquehanna University was selected as the 2022 Landmark Women's Cross Country Senior Scholar-Athlete. She is the third River Hawk to earn the honor, joining Laura Gausmann (2008) and Erin Reese (2020).
The Shillington, Pa. native will compete at the NCAA Championship meet for the second time in her career on Saturday, November 19. The race will be held at the Forest Akers East Golf Course in Lansing, Mich. Carter qualified after placing ninth at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals last weekend. She crossed the finish line in 22:23.9 to earn the automatic bid.
As a member of the SU women's cross country team, Carter has had a standout career. As a freshman, she was named the Rookie of the Year after placing 11th overall to earn All-Landmark Second Team honors.
After missing her sophomore season due to its cancellation because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Carter produced another successful season as a junior. She placed second at the conference championship meet to earn First Team honors and followed that performance with a ninth-place showing at the NCAA Regional meet - where she qualified for the NCAA National Championship. Carter finished in 125th at her first NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship.
This past fall, Carter finished second at the conference meet to earn her second First Team honor. She set a new 6k record at the Paul Short meet with her time of 21:47.9, which is also the third-best in the Landmark.
Carter also shines off the course. She holds a 3.57 cumulative grade point average as an Environmental Studies major and has been named to the Susquehanna Dean's List five teams, and is expected to make the Landmark Academic Honor Roll for the third time.
Additionally, Carter has spent eight hours per academic week interning at the Lewisburg Children's Museum and spent this past summer doing conservation work in the Galapagos Islands as part of her study abroad program. She was also chosen to partake in the Amazon Prime Campus Tours series, which is set to premiere in 2023 on Amazon Prime Video.
