Susquehanna Defeats Moravian in Landmark Volleyball First Round

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Susquehanna women's volleyball team defeated Moravian 3-2 on Tuesday in a high-scoring five-set thriller to move on to the Landmark Conference semifinals. The win sets up a date with the top-seeded and defending national champion Juniata College on Thursday night. The River Hawks combined for 90 points with 71 kills as Kyndall Mason led with 25 points and 20 kills, while Addison Dodge collected 21.5 points with 17 kills and eight total blocks.

HOW IT WENT DOWN
  • The first set began with Susquehanna jumping out to an early 6-2 lead that the Greyhounds eventually came back from. The two teams would start trading points, with no team going up by more than two points after Susquehanna's early lead. In a set that saw 17 ties and the scoring go over the 25-point mark, the River Hawks were able to steal the first set 34-32 after scoring three-straight points.
  • Set two also saw extra volleyball at the end of the set, but in the early going, Susquehanna managed to gain another lead. Moravian would again close the lead, and the back-and-forth action from set one carried over to set two. With the score at 14-12 in favor of the River Hawks, Susquehanna would go on an eight-to-one run to make it a 21-13 ballgame.
  • With their backs against the wall, however, Moravian would pull off an improbable comeback, going on a seven-point run themselves to take a 25-24 lead. More back-and-forth action ensued until a kill from Stella Robinson put Susquehanna up 27-26, but three consecutive attack errors from the River Hawks gave Moravian the 29-27 win in the second set.
  • The theme in the early going of the first two sets continued in the third, again with the River Hawks going up early only for Moravian to crawl their way back and the two teams trading points. With the score 11-11, Susquehanna would go on a run again that won them the set this time, outscoring Moravian 14-6 for the remainder of the set. Kyndall Mason's six kills in the set helped lead Susquehanna over Moravian 25-16 in set three.
  • After a third set that didn't see much back-and-forth action, set four began with it, and it remained that way for the entire set. No team led by more than three in the set, as both teams had similar stats in the fourth. Moravian had 17 kills to Susquehanna's 13 while also having a .194 hitting percentage to the River Hawks' .138. This slight advantage for Moravian was all the difference as they went on to take set four 25-23 and force a fifth set.
  • In the final frame, the teams continued to trade points to begin the set until the River Hawks completely took over the match. Mason recorded four service aces in the fifth, while Addison Dodge and Stella Robinson each added two kills in the set to give the River Hawks a 15-5 fifth set win and a 3-2 win over the Greyhounds.
