A new look has come to Talbot Field and the Catholic University Softball Field in 2025! Construction on the more than $5 million Diamond Project began in August 2024 and was completed in May 2025.

“We are incredibly excited to reopen the baseball and softball fields following the second phase of the Diamond Project,” said Associate Athletic Director for Facilities and Operations Jordan Hoover.

The project cost just over $5.2 million, with both fields renovated with Shaw Sports Turf B1K Double Play System All Weather Turf with sand and rubber infill.

Per Shaw Sports, B1K natural systems have been specifically designed to replicate the performance of a high-quality natural field. To achieve that level of performance, each area contains a unique infill type or mixture.

The B1K Double Play System uses standard infill all the way around. As mentioned above, each area of the diamond has its own special mixture to mimic a natural playing surface.

  • Mound - FULL COUNT - a sturdy synthetic mound option to handle pitch after pitch
  • Infield - TAG UP - a hybrid synthetic product with a natural, well-manicured aesthetic
  • Outfield - TAG UP - a hybrid synthetic product with a natural, well-manicured aesthetic
  • Clay/Plate - SIX4THREE - using a sturdy fiber construction for added durability around the bases, a product that mimics the characteristics of clay
  • Warning Track - TRUTRACK - a solution that can be heard & felt when approaching the wall

According to Shaw, the B1K system promotes more natural play, a consistent ball bounce that allows players to field the ball more naturally, and a firmer surface that minimizes fatigue and soreness.

“The turf renovations at both Talbot Field and the Catholic Softball Field are a transformational change for our programs,” said Hoover. “They will not only greatly improve the student-athlete experience, but open the door for external partnership opportunities within the District of Columbia.”

While the renovations were completed, the baseball and softball programs completed highly successful 2025 campaigns despite both fields being offline for the campaigns. The baseball program won its sixth Landmark Conference crown, reaching the NCAA Tournament, while the softball program set a program record for wins in a season, winning 31 games and reaching the Landmark Conference Championship Series.

Both teams will mark the openings of their fields this fall in October.

“This project has provided us with two of the premier baseball & softball facilities in the region, as well as putting us in the conversation with some of the best facilities across Division III athletics nationally,” said Hoover.
