Landmark Announces Athletes of the Week

TOWSON, Md. - The Landmark Conference has released the Athletes of the Week. The conference will recognize a student-athlete for each sport based on their contributions to their team throughout the season.

For the spring season, baseball, softball, and lacrosse will be announced on Monday, followed by golf, tennis, and outdoor track and field on Tuesday.

  • Men's Golf Athlete of the Week: Zach Miller (Moravian University) 
    Miller averaged 74.7 over three rounds during the week. He began the week with a 78 to tie for ninth at the Elizabethtown College Spring Blue Jay Invitational, and Miller tied for seventh in the 36-hole Spring Thaw at Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort at 146 with rounds of 71 and 75. He carded eight birdies and 20 pars in the Spring Thaw.

    Women's Golf Athlete of the Week: Josephine Nguyen (Drew University) 
    Nguyen won medalist honors at the Stevenson Invitational, where she fired a 4-over-par 75 to earn her third individual title of the season and her first of the spring. She sank a pair of birdies and shot even-par on 12 other holes en route to a five-stroke victory. Nguyen helped lead the Rangers to a second-place finish among 10 teams, placing six strokes behind Stevenson. 

  • Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week: Diego Romo (Catholic University) 
    Romo played a key role in Catholic’s 4–3 victory over Goucher, marking the Cardinals’ first win over the Gophers in 12 years. He teamed with James Earwood at the No. 1 doubles spot, earning a 7–6 (7–5) tiebreak victory to secure the Cardinals’ second doubles win and clinch the doubles point. Romo continued his strong performance in the No. 4 singles match, where he won in straight sets. He edged his opponent in a first-set tiebreak, 7–6 (7–2), before closing out the match with a 6–4 win in the second set.

    Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week: Natalia Melendez Sanchez (Drew University)
    Melendez Sanchez went 2-0 in singles play over a pair of Ranger victories. In a 7-0 win over FDU-Florham, she recorded a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 1 position. She followed up with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles in Drew's victory at Elizabethtown.

  • Men's Track Athlete of the Week: Josef Book (Elizabethtown College)
    Book won the 400m hurdles and was third in the 110m hurdles for the Blue Jays at last Wednesday's York (PA) Twilight Meet. Book captured the 400m hurdles title with a season-best time of 53.45, moving into second place on Elizabethtown’s all-time list. His 400m mark ranks first in the region and 10th in the nation.

    Men's Field Athlete of the Week: Zach Mogambi (Drew University)
    Mogambi won the discus for the second time in as many meets, capturing the event at the Ursinus College Springfest. He posted a winning throw of 148 feet, 11 inches (45.41 meters) to finish over a foot better than the event runner-up. Mogambi also finished fourth in the shot put with a launch of 46-11 3/4  (14.32m), improving upon his own school record by three inches. His throw in the shot put also placed him third on the Landmark Conference performance list for the season. In addition, he placed eighth in the hammer with a mark of 135-7 (39.81m).

    Women's Track Athlete of the Week: Emily Camlet (Drew University)
    Camlet won the 400-meter dash by over a second, with a time of 56.83 seconds at the Ursinus College Springfest. Camlet also posted her career-best time in the 200-meter dash, placing second in a field of 55 with a time of 25.05 seconds. Her time lowered her own school record by 0.31 seconds, placing her first in the Landmark Conference and 32nd in Division III. In addition, Camlet led off for the 4x100-meter relay team that placed third out of 10 teams and established a program record with a time of 49.48 seconds.

    Women's Field Athlete of the Week: Isabella Cowger (Elizabethtown College)
    Cowger continued her march through the school and conference record books this past Wednesday at York (Pa.). She won all three throws she contested: discus, shot put, and hammer throw. Cowger also set two new Etown and Landmark records in the discus and shot. Her new discus record is 45.56m (149'6"), now fourth nationally, and her new shot put record stands at 13.01m (42' 8-¼"). Cowger is the first Blue Jay and Landmark female to reach marks of at least 45.00m in the discus and 13.00m in the shot put (18th in NCAA Div. III). Her winning hammer throw was also a personal best at 45.30m (148'7").
