Anderson Named Landmark Football Senior Scholar-Athlete

TOWSON, Md. -The Landmark Conference selects 23 senior scholar-athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics.

The honorees must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletic representatives, athletic communications, and diversity, ethnicity, and inclusion designee.

Billy Anderson of Wilkes University was selected as the 2023 Landmark Conference Football Senior Scholar-Athlete. He is the second Colonel in program history to be selected.

Anderson joins Nick Kinzler of the men’s soccer team as a part of the first class of Landmark senior-scholar athletes for Wilkes, and is the first member of the football program to earn this award.

Last year, Anderson became only the second Colonel to earn the senior scholar-athlete award during the team’s time in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC), and is the first to win both in the MAC and the Landmark this year as a fifth-year senior. He finished with a cumulative GPA of 3.72 through the fall semester, and is expected to graduate as a double-major in criminology and sociology in May 2024.

Anderson was a semifinalist for the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy®, which recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.

Anderson has been a part of the team’s Leadership Council since his freshman year in 2019, and was named a team captain for the 2023 season.

The fifth-year senior is also active in the Wilkes-Barre community, helping the Keep PA Beautiful organization with highway cleanup efforts as well as the Be The Match program to help find bone marrow donations in the spring of 2023. In 2021 and 2022 he assisted in cleanup efforts at Kirby Park.

On the field, Anderson was named Second Team All-Landmark Conference in 2023 as a part of an offensive line that helped break program records for single game total offense and single game rushing yards. The team went 5-6 overall and 4-2 in Landmark play, finishing second in the first year of Landmark Conference football. Anderson and the Colonels ended the year with a 35-17 victory in the Cape Henry Bowl over Bridgewater College.

In 2022, Anderson was named Third Team All-Region 1 at Center by D3football.com, and was named First-Team All-MAC on the offensive line.
