Athlete of the Week

TOWSON, Md. - The Landmark Conference has released the Athletes of the Week. The conference will recognize a student-athlete for each sport based on their contributions to their team throughout the season.

For the fall season, field hockey, football, soccer, and volleyball will be announced on Monday, followed by cross country, swimming and diving, golf, and tennis on Tuesday.

  • Men: Tommy Edwards  (Drew University)
    Edwards placed 22nd out of 152 Division I, II, and III runners to lead the Rangers to a sixth-place finish among 17 teams at the NJIT Invitational. He clocked a personal-record time of 27 minutes, 24 seconds for the 8,000-meter course to finish seventh among Division III competition. His efforts helped Drew finish third out of eight Division III schools.

    Women: Kate Rice (Drew University)
    Rice placed second among 109 runners to lead the Rangers to the team title in the “Open” race of the NJIT Invitational. She cruised the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 54 seconds to finish just seven seconds behind Hannah Phillips of the United States Military Academy Preparatory School. Her efforts helped the Rangers to a team score of 27 to beat our runner-up Delaware TC by 12 points while also finishing ahead of 10 other colleges.

  • Men: Nicholas Heinio-Widell  (Drew University)
    Heinio-Widell won four events, including three individual victories, to lead the Rangers in their season opener versus Catholic. He touched first in the 50-freestyle (21.61), 100-meter butterfly (51.79), and the 200-IM (1:58.85) while also swimming on the winning 200-meter medley relay team (1:36.03). 

    Women: Alyssa Bean (University of Scranton)
    Bean captured three individual event titles and contributed to a relay victory, leading the Royals’ dominant opening meet. She claimed wins in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.79), 100-yard backstroke (1:03.09), and 50-yard butterfly (28.15). Bean also helped secure a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (1:54.94).

  • Men: Sam Dolan (Drew University)
    Dolan tied for 13th in a field of 108 golfers at the West Pines Intercollegiate, held on Oct. 6-7 in Douglasville, Ga.. He shot a 3-over-par 216 (71-73-72) for the 54-hole event and finished with seven birdies, including three in both the first and last rounds. His efforts helped the Rangers finish eighth out of 21 teams with an 878 (+26).

    Women: Kyleen McCance (Wilkes University)
    Kyleen McCance had a dominant week on the course, winning the individual championship at Bloomsburg University’s Husky Fall Invitational and medaling in the team’s win against Scranton, besting second place by 14 strokes. 

  • Men: Nathan Bassett (Susquehanna University)
    Bassett put together a perfect 6-0 record across the three matches as the River Hawks picked up wins over Albright, Misericordia and Penn College. He opened the week at Albright with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles and added a straight-sets win (6-2, 6-3) at No. 5 singles. Returning home, he earned back-to-back 6-2 and 6-0 doubles wins against Misericordia and Penn College, while he went through singles play with four consecutive 6-0 sets to finish off the week unbeaten.

    Women: Claire Gallagher (Susquehanna University)
    Gallagher won all three of her matches this weekend as Susquehanna earned 4-3 victories over both Misericordia and Penn College. Against Misericordia, she dominated at No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win. Facing Penn College, she posted a 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles, helping secure the doubles point. She then clinched the match with a 7-6 (5), 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles.
