Friday Focus with Brian Layton Jr

TOWSON, Md. – Every Friday, the Landmark Conference spotlights one of our standout student-athletes in the Friday Focus series. This week’s feature highlights Brian Layton Jr., a senior on the Susquehanna University football team. From game-day rituals to hidden talents off the field, Brian shares what makes his experience unforgettable.

What’s your favorite memory competing for Susquehanna?
My favorite memory is definitely winning in the Sweet Sixteen against St. John's (MN) on a last-second field goal. It was the first time I had ever flown for a sporting event I played in, and it was awesome to win a playoff game in that atmosphere with my teammates.

What drew you to your sport originally?
I loved the speed and physicality of the game as a kid. I always played tackle football in my mom's living room growing up, so I’ve loved this sport since I could walk.

How do you prepare the night before a big game?
The night before a big game, I can’t sit still. I usually get Chipotle with my roommates first, then do laundry while watching a movie. I also call my dad every Friday to talk about the opponent and just relax a bit more.

Favorite class you’ve taken?
Economic History was fascinating. It explained why things are the way they are in terms of money. I’ve also loved Faith and Values with Dr. Mann.

Who inspires you most on your team, and why?
Robert Davis inspires me the most. He comes to work every day with the mindset that there is no ceiling for him. There’s never been a day he hasn’t given his all, and that motivates me both as a football player and as a person.

What’s your go-to hype song?
“Shootaby Playboi Carti and Lil Uzi Vert.

Postgame meal of choice?
My dad’s cheesesteaks.

Hidden talent most people don’t know you have?
I sing and play guitar, piano, and bass, and perform with my band during the summer.

Favorite athlete growing up?
Jackie Robinson.

First jersey number — and why?
#93, probably because I was a defensive lineman.

First college game — what do you remember?
My first college game was at Lycoming College in 2022. I remember being excited to play the sport I love at the next level. I got in at the end of the game for my first snaps and heard words of encouragement from my coaches, which made me believe I could do anything on the field.

One word your teammates would use to describe you?
Passionate.
