Landmark Announces Athletes of the Week

TOWSON, Md. - The Landmark Conference has released the Athletes of the Week. The conference will recognize a student-athlete for each sport based on their contributions to their team throughout the season.

For the winter season, men's and women's basketball will be announced on Monday, followed by swimming and diving, and indoor track and field on Tuesday.

  • Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week: Austin Smith (Elizabethtown College)
    Austin Smith placed first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.99 and finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking 1:05.70 against York (Pa.). In the meet against Penn State Altoona and Juniata, he earned a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.38 and won the 100-yard butterfly in 54.75. His 100-yard backstroke time marked a personal best.

    Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week: Sarah Weber (Drew University)
    Sarah Weber celebrated Senior Day with two individual wins and one relay victory. She touched first in both the 100-breaststroke (1:09.79) and the 200-breaststroke (2:31.27), ranking fourth in the conference in both events, and also swam the breaststroke leg of Drew's winning 200-medley relay (1:51.08).

  • Men's Track Athlete of the Week: Bryan Kerchner (Moravian University)
    Bryan Kerchner captured first in the mile run at the Hounds Classic in Lehigh University's Rauch Fieldhouse with a time of 4:19.02. He also ran the second leg of Moravian's 4x400-meter relay that crossed the finish line at 3:41.06.

    Men's Field Athlete of the Week: Cole Goodwin (Susquehanna University)
    Cole Goodwin looked to follow up his Landmark Athlete of the Week performance last week with high marks in the weight throw and shot put. He won the weight throw with a measurement of 15.32m and placed second in the shot put at 14.40m. He ranks second in conference and seventh regionally with his weight throw mark from Saturday.

    Women's Track Athlete of the Week: Tara Smurla (Moravian University) 
    Tara Smurla was the runner-up in the 3,000-meter run at the Hounds Classic in Lehigh University's Rauch Fieldhouse, setting both a school record and a Landmark Conference record with an All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference qualifying time of 10:00.12. Smurla also finished second in the 5,000-meter run with an AARTFC qualifying time of 18:39.38.

    Women's Field Athlete of the Week: Jessica Heydt (Moravian University) 
    Jessica Heydt placed second in the 20-pound weight throw at the Hounds Classic in Lehigh University's Rauch Fieldhouse with a mark of 15.71 meters (51-6.5), which qualifies her fourth in the region. The distance, a new personal best which also ranked her fourth all-time in the Landmark, came on her final throw of the preliminary round.
