News 6/19/2026 12:00:00 PM Get to Know Griffin Schmoyer TOWSON, Md. – The Landmark Conference is proud to spotlight the campus leaders who support and elevate the student-athlete experience. In the final edition of this year’s Admin Q&A series, we feature Griffin Schmoyer, Assistant Sports Information Director at Wilkes University. From finding his path in athletic communications to building relationships with student-athletes and bringing game days to life, Schmoyer shares the experiences and perspectives that have shaped his journey in collegiate athletics. What led you to a career in college athletics? Originally, I wanted to be a play-by-play commentator out of college, but with those jobs being hard to come by. I eventually found an opportunity here at Wilkes that allowed me to take what I loved doing in college and add a whole new skill set on top of it! What’s your favorite part of your current role? Building relationships with our student-athletes. It's my job to highlight their accomplishments, and having strong relationships with them is important to me. The nerdy answer? Updating record books. Something about going through them at the end of a season just scratches an itch in my brain. How do you define success in your work? Success to me as an SID is very multifaceted, just by the nature of the work that we do. Are we on top of news releases and highlighting player milestones during the week? On gameday, did our stream run smoothly and at the quality we expect? Were there any hiccups with live stats, and did we overcome them? Gamedays with multiple events that all run well are very rewarding, and even better when they end with a Colonel win! And don't forget to thank your SIDs! It goes a long way. What advice do you give student-athletes about leadership? If I may give two pieces that I still need to remind myself from time to time: Even in a leadership role, we are all still growing and never truly ever stop learning, especially in this profession. It's okay to make mistakes! Everyone does. Just as important, though, is how you deal with and how you grow from them. Control what you can control. I have it taped to my computer monitor for a reason. Focus your energy on what you can influence directly. How does your department celebrate student success? Every week within our office, we vote on a men's and women's Colonel of the Week, celebrating the best of our on-field achievements. During D3 week, we hold an awards ceremony highlighting academic achievements, namely inductees into our chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma and our Colonel Elite Society. Favorite Landmark Conference memory or event? Doing play-by-play for our softball team in the 2025 conference tournament. It was a wild game against Moravian that went to extra innings, and it was such a fun day to be a part of. Best part of being at Wilkes University? I love working with our coaching staff. They're all fantastic people to work with and great resources for me as a young professional. What’s your go-to coffee order or campus snack? Does music count in place of coffee? The heavier the better to get me fired up in the morning.
