Catholic Secures Team Title; Drew Relay Record Caps Final Night

BALTIMORE, Md. - Catholic University claimed its 10th consecutive Landmark Conference men’s swimming & diving championship, giving the Cardinals 10 all-time titles and the conference record, previously held by United States Merchant Marine Academy with nine.

Drew University’s Liam Gregory opened the session with a win in the 1650 freestyle, touching in 16:20.37. Catholic answered in the 200 backstroke, where Teddy Tsakumis posted a winning time of 1:50.27.

Drew’s Nicholas Heinio-Widell captured the 100 freestyle in 44.99, while Hunor Harsanyi added another Ranger victory in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:06.68. Drew continued its strong night in the 200 butterfly, as Kyle Talerico placed first in 1:51.19.

Catholic added key scoring finishes throughout the final session. In the 1650 freestyle, Shawn Mashburn placed second (16:20.37) and Sean Kelty finished third (16:24.56). John Holler took second in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:07.03, while Vincent Wills and Ben Lutcher placed second and third in the 200 butterfly in 1:53.37 and 1:53.88. The Cardinals also finished second in the 400 freestyle relay, as Holler, Jack Thompson, Alex Tsakumis, and Teddy Tsakumis combined for a 3:06.18.

The championship concluded with a record performance in the 400 freestyle relay. Drew’s quartet of Heinio-Widell, Thiago de Miranda e Silva, Gregory, and Brendan Burkett combined for a 3:04.87 to set a new meet record in the final event.
