Scranton Claims 2022-23 Landmark Presidents' Trophy

TOWSON, Md. - After the conclusion of the 2022-23 season, The University of Scranton claimed the Landmark Conference President's Trophy.

The Trophy is awarded based on a formula that rewards institutions for regular-season conference standings as well as results in Landmark postseason competition. The point structure was revised in the summer of 2016 with different point hierarchies for the team and individual sports, but the maximum number of points any team can earn is 15. The total number of points each institution earns is divided by the number of Landmark sports sponsored to determine the average.

The Royals secured the 2022-23 trophy for the second time in three years, collecting 211.5 points for an average of 9.61.

"The 2022-23 academic year for Scranton athletics will go down as the most successful year in school history," exclaimed Scranton Director of Athletics, Dave Martin. "Capturing the Landmark Presidents Trophy is the icing on the cake! I am incredibly proud of the culture we have built in the athletics department at Scranton. This award is a result of a tremendous amount of hard work, commitment, and dedication from our student-athletes as well as our coaches. We would also like to thank our parents, alumni, and friends of our program who all had a hand in making this season such a success!"

During the fall season, the Royals made an appearance in every postseason opportunity. They claimed conference titles in women's cross country, and men's and women's soccer. Volleyball was the runner-up in its conference championship, and field hockey earned a spot in the postseason tournament. Men's cross country placed fourth at its championship event.

Scranton kept that momentum heading into the winter season. Both basketball programs won their respective conference championships while the women's swimming and diving team placed was the runner-up at theirs. The men's swimming and diving program had a third-place showing, while the women's indoor track and field team placed second and the indoor meet. The men's indoor program had a top-five showing.

The spring was identical to that of the fall and winter seasons, as the Royals competed in every postseason opportunity the conference offers. The Royals were champions in men's and women's lacrosse as well as men's golf. They were runners-up in baseball and qualified for the conference softball, and men's and women's tennis tournaments. Both outdoor track and field programs earned a top-five finish.

Overall, the Royals won eight of the conference's 22 sponsored championships.

Catholic University finished second in the standings, followed by Susquehanna University in third and Moravian University in fourth. Drew University claimed the fifth spot, followed by Elizabethtown College in sixth, Goucher College in seventh, and Juniata College in eighth.
